Accommodation Youth Assistance Program (AYAP)

Accommodation for Youth Assistance Program  supports children aged 12–15 and adults 18-65+ who are experiencing difficulties in their family home, using a trauma-informed and therapeutic approach. Our caseworkers aim to maintain each individual’s placement in the family home by providing early intervention through Outreach, and in some cases providing temporary accommodation, with the main focus of restoring the person back into the respite based family home. Each young or old person will have their own caseworker, who will support them through this process and provide family interventions. If returning to the family home is not a safe option, the caseworker will help the individual find alternative long-term accommodation.

 Accommodation

Respite Australia Care has a number of accommodation options (in Melbourne and Sydney) for young people aged 10–20 currently living without a home. Both homes are staffed with accommodation support workers who provide a safe and homely environment for the residents. Each resident has their own caseworker, who managers their case with a personal, supportive approach. Residents are also encouraged to take part in the living skills activities available at the homes, which foster their ability to confidently transition to an independent living arrangement. Our Hotel rooms, hostels, respites centre and Houses are located throughout Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Darwin, Gold Coast, Melbourne and Sydney metro areas.

Supported Independent Living Program

Proposed Solution

The Supported Independent Living Program (SILP) helps old and young people in out-of-home care successfully transition into independence and adulthood. Participants are given the opportunity to experience the realities of independent living with the security of on-hand support. Each participant shares accommodation with two other young people and is allocated their own caseworker to help them develop living skills in one-on-one sessions. Participants learn how to manage their rent, bills, income, education and employment while living independently. The goal of the program is to support young people until they have the confidence to be self-reliant.

To be eligible for SILP, a young person needs to be:

  • Under the parental responsibility of the Minister.
  • Aged between 6 and 65+ years.
  • Receiving an income (either a wage or Centrelink payments).
  • Engaged in a vocational program or employment.
  • Assessed as capable of independent living after a period of support.

The Safety of Your Family

Although a safe haven for families and physically strong individuals, this shelter was totally inappropriate for a frail elderly woman. The available food was granola bars, water and beds were low cots in a drafty, large gym which presented a medical risk for this senior. While at the shelter, staff at RAUC brought both the aide and her client warm, hearty food to nourish them. Still, our client was confronted with serious medical conditions and was eventually transferred to the hospital. After several days by her side at the shelter, the RAUC companion went along to the hospital with her charge. Here, too, RAUC staff brought the home companion the food she needed. The senior client recovered and was discharged home after a week long ordeal.

Our in-house cooks will talk to you about the type of food you like to eat, then delight you with delicious and nutritious food that will give you energy for the day’s activities ahead.
