Understanding the resources available for people with disabilities can feel overwhelming. You know the life you want to live, but may be unsure of your options, which services can work together, and how to access them.
At Respite Australia Care, we know that support looks different for everyone – that’s why we take a personalised approach to resource navigation. With you leading the way, Respite Australia Care assists with exploring possibilities and then connects you with the resources to make your vision for the future a reality.

What is Self-Directed Resource Navigation?
Self-Directed Resource Navigation is a series of informational meetings designed to explore options and connect you to resources that align with your goals. This personalized approach gives you the tools to take the next step while developing self-advocacy skills. It starts with you – a conversation to understand your aspirations, challenges, and plans for the future. From there, we dig in to identify local resources, and with your feedback build a roadmap to achieve your goals.
Am I eligible for this service?
This service is for people with disabilities who are facing or planning a transition in their life. Intensive services, Self-Directed Resource Navigation is funded through the National Disability Scheme (NDIS) and requires that a person has a waiver for either Alternative Care (AC), Brain Injury (BI), Community Alternative Care (CAC), Community Access for Disability Inclusion (CADI), or Developmental Disabilities (DD). Private pay is also accepted for this service.

What are Individual Day Support Services?
Individualised Day Support Services provide one-to-one opportunities so people with disabilities can maintain essential life skills and access preferred activities virtually and in the community. Examples include mobility safety, skill development, decision making, problem solving, self-care support, and more.
By directing your service, you decide what to explore and learn. Through undivided, personalized support, we begin by getting to know you while sharing our knowledge of available options. Together, we come up with an actionable plan and then provide your desired level of support.
Who is eligible to receive this service?
This service is for people who are 18 years of age or older and are diagnosed with a disability or a related condition. The person served can live in their own home, their family’s home, or in a group home and support is based on the individual’s plan and goals.

Recreational Activities at Respite Australia Care
Recreation - Health & Fitness Programs
Health, wellness, and nutrition are all integral elements of a balanced healthy lifestyle and are featured in the Respite Australia Care curriculum. We incorporate healthy physical activity with effective nutritional coaching into each day’s activities along with providing opportunities for specific areas of fitness.
Recreation - Socialisation Activities
Recreational experiences and social opportunities are essential parts of one’s life. These activities factor in developing one’s identity, seeking personal fulfillment, and promoting overall happiness. Our vision of equitable opportunities for our participants who have intellectual disabilities includes those pursuits, and so we offer a full calendar of social and recreational activities.
These activities allow participants to build strong, positive relationships with their peers while also enjoying all aspects of community life. Events and activities include:
Recreation - Performances & Fine Arts Programs
We provide five branches of Recreation opportunities: Dance, Fine Arts, Music, Health & Fitness, and Socialization Activities. We encourage participants to step out of their comfort zone and try things they haven’t done before. They are able to express themselves and participate in these programs while strengthening social skills with peers and staff.
Performance and Fine Art represent a valuable means of expression and participation for all members of the community. While these artistic opportunities may be difficult to access for individuals who have intellectual disabilities, the participants of Respite Australia Care enjoy a robust variety of options.
Employment Programs
We strongly believe that individuals who have disabilities want to be active contributors within their communities and achieve their highest level of self-reliance. For that reason, we have developed several unique approaches that not only assist these individuals in fulfilling their dreams of attaining meaningful employment but ensure that employers are receiving valuable employees. Through our Pre-Vocational and Vocational Programs, participants receive the necessary training and support needed to enter the workforce.
Life Skills Culinary Program

teaches our students to work in a homestyle kitchen to learn the necessary cooking skills needed for independent living or progression into Respite Australia Care’s Catering Program.
Participants in the Life-Skills Culinary Program participate in the planning and preparation of several internal catering events throughout the year. This supplements the classroom training members receive that center around event planning and provide opportunities for participants to gain the skills needed to advance to the Group Supported Employment Culinary Program. These events include monthly leadership lunches, hors d’oeuvre and appetizers for onsite parent meetings, and internal events throughout the year.
The Catering Program
provides group supported employment job training opportunities which include internal catering requests made through the One Step Beyond Catering Company or our Hot Dog Cart. Participants also receive support and assistance to procure food-service employment external to Respite Australia Care.

Kitchen Discovery
Kitchen Discovery (Block Four)
Coursework includes lessons on how to organize kitchen tools and equipment, how to read and use a recipe, appropriate knife selection, and handling, and how to use kitchen equipment.
Technique and Timing Skills
Technique and Timing Skills (Block Five)
Coursework includes hands-on lessons learning how to bake, braise, grill, poach, stew, roast, and sauté meals.
New Frontiers Annual Trip
- An annual overnight trip called, the New Frontiers Annual Trip
- Weekly after hours Friday Fun Night and Saturday Social events
- Themed dances including an annual Boo Bash and Winter Formal
- Trips to local sporting events and restaurants.
Skills Programs
Helping our participants achieve greater independence is central to our mission at Respite Australia Care. Our Life Skills Programs utilize a person-centered approach to help each of our participants learn the necessary skills to manage everyday tasks and responsibilities. The Life Skills Programs are designed to foster an environment that is safe, friendly, and helpful to our members’ pursuit of their full potential.
